When ticking off the benefits of physical activity, few of us would include
intracellular housecleaning. But a new study suggests that the ability of
exercise to speed the removal of garbage from inside our body’s cells may
be one of its most valuable, if least visible, effects.

In the new research, which was published last month in
Nature,

Doctors: Test all kids for cholesterol by age 11

Every child should be tested for high cholesterol between ages 9 and 11 so
steps can be taken to prevent heart disease later on, a panel of doctors
urged Friday in new advice that is sure to be controversial.

Until now, major medical groups have suggested cholesterol tests only for
children with a family history of early heart disease or high cholesterol
and those who are obese or have diabetes or high blood pressure. But
studies show that is missing many children with high cholesterol, ... << MORE >>

Exercise link to higher test scores

PRIMARY school students who exercise regularly are more likely to have
higher NAPLAN test scores in numeracy and writing, according to a landmark

The strong link between improved academic performance and physical exercise

Exercise means a happier and smarter person

Exercise = more BDNF More BDNF = more brain nurons and branches

Over the last two weeks, I’ve been making a case for getting (or keeping)
kids active, and highlighting active programs for kids at our local
recreation centers. This week, I want to explain a few of the neurological
benefits to exercise, and highlight FAST NYC programs.

“Research indicates that exercise may encourage brains to work at optimum
capacity, by causing nerve cells to multiply, strengthening their
interconnections and ... << MORE >>

Kids can exercise without even knowing - just don't tell them!

With two gorgeous boys he loves more than anything, and his genius insight
into being a dad as our weekly parenting columnist, Jeff Brazier is the
poster boy for great fatherhood. And while some mums and dads blame their
rubbish fitness levels on being too busy with the kids, for Jeff it’s just
the opposite. In fact, he reckons Bobby, seven, and six-year-old Freddy are
his inspiration for keeping fit â€" and playtime with them can often feel like
a serious workout.

Exercise counteracts aging effects

"You're 100 times better … as an athlete training in your 40s and 50s than a
sedentary person in your 20s, any way you look at it."

As we age, our bodies change in ways that challenge athletic ability. But
exercise also can slow down â€" and in some cases even prevent â€" some of the
physiological ravages of time. "A lot of things that we thought were just
inherent to the aging process and were going to happen no matter what don't
really have ... << MORE >>
